.: Step by Step
We know that inviting Builders/Tradesmen into your home can be daunting, to help ease your concerns we have put together a step by step guide with pictures of how EPDM rubber roofing is installed. We hope this will reassure you that the installation process is safe, clean and above all casues minimum disruption to you and your property.
.: Removal
The first job when replacing your current roof is to remove the existing damaged covering. This is done in a variety of ways depending on the covering currently in use and its original installation method.
If your existing roof has been leaking then it is likely that the boards underneath will need replacing, this is called the roof deck. We will renew the deck and can also offer the opportunity to renew the fascia boards whilst the roof is stripped.
All rubbish generated will be removed form site and disposed of by Caspian. We work as cleanly as we can and whilst on site all rubbish will be placed in a single location stacked neatly.
.: The New Membrane
Your new EPDM membrane is now ready to be installed. The single sheet will be unfolded and laid onto the deck to settle, this process will remove any creases from transportation and ensure the membrane gets the best possible grip on the roof deck.
The settlement time depends on a number of factors, the most important of which is the ambient temperature. A warm sunny day will allow the mebrane to settle within minutes whereas on a cooler overcast day it may take an hour or more. We Generally use this time to tidy an debris and prepare the adhesives and edge trims for the remainder of the installation process.
.: Adhesives
The adhesives used to bond the EPDM to your roof deck are all cold applied. A water based adhesive is used for the main area and takes approximately 24 hours to cure completely, an instant bond contact adhesive is also applied to the edges to ensure the membrane stays in place for the duration fo the curing process. Both require no heat application and provide a long term bond which will last for the lifetime of the roof with no peeling or resticking required.
The membrane will be pulled half way back and the adhesive applied using a roller system, we leave a gap of approximately 100mm (4") around the edges which will be bonded lateer using the instant bond contact adhesive. The mebrane is then laid into the adhesive and a soft broom is used to remove any air pockets and ensure the membrane is pushed firmly into the water based adhesive.
This procedure is then repeated with the remaining half of the mebrane followed by a further brush over the entire membrane to ensure the air pockets are removed and the membrane fully bonds to the roof deck.
.: The Edges
The edges of the membrane are then bonded to the surface using the instant bond contact adhesive. The adhesive is applied to both the membrane and the roof deck and gently pushed together to ensure no air is trapped.
The edge trims, prepared earlier, are then fitted to give an aesthetically pleasing and durable finish to your new roof. If you roof runs against a pitched roof the membrane will be tucked under your existing roofing felt to ensure a water tight leak free finish.
Each roof is different so will vary slightly in technique, on this occasion the neighbouring property had a standard felt roof so a termination bar was fitted to the join. A water block mastic was laid under the EPDM and an alluminum bar fitted and bolted ensuring a leak free join.
.: Finished
The final stage is to give the roof a final sweep to remove any debris, the edge trims, fascia boards and guttering will all be cleaned down leaving your roof tidy and clean.
Once all the stages are complete we are ready to leave you in peace and let you enjoy your new leak free, durable and good looking flat roof!
We will remove all the waste we have generated including any offcuts from our materials and your original roof deck if it has been replaced. These will be disposed of in the correct manner and we are licensed waste carriers so you have no fear of your roof turning up anywhere other than the rubbish tip.
